Green Mountain, Ascension, 1884-01-27 - 1884-01-31
Scope and Contents
202 x 140 mm. Showing part of the road on Green Mountain leading through a tunnel in the rockface. With graffiti carved on the rocks and a figure standing at the edge of the road. Situated south-east of the centre of the island and rising to a height of 2817 feet, the slopes of Green Mountain form the farming area of the island, where crops introduced by the marine station from 1815 onwards have thrived in the temperate climates. The path seen here encircles the mountain at a height of 2400 feet; originally envisaged as an all round look-out, it was cut under the direction of Lieutenant Wade in 1839 and named Elliott's Path after Admiral Elliott, Comander-in-Chief of the West Coast of Africa Squadron, who formally opened it in 1840.
