Barberton, De Kaap Gold Fields, 1888
Scope and Contents
189 x 126 mm. A view of the town of Barberton, the headquarters of the De Kaap gold fields. The neatly laid out houses and streets are enclosed in the semi-circular ridge of hills from which the photograph is taken. The heyday of gold production in the area was from 1882-1887 and this view was probably taken around the end of this period: By the beginning of 1887 it had, indeed, developed into a town of open structure which spread from under the Saddleback to Lomas Ridge, while in the east and west respectively residences of some pretension were being erected on the Berea and in Belgravia' (Praagh, 1906, pp. 360-1).
