Pietermaritzburg, Natal [i.e. KwaZulu-Natal], 1873 - 1877
Scope and Contents
172 x 114 mm. A view from the top storey of a building looking south-west along Church Street, Pietermartzburg. In the right foreground, at No. 22, are the premises of the wine and spirit merchant Edward Rance (1827-1876). This dates the picture to before 1879, by which year Rance is no longer featured in Vietzen (1963). He may have moved to these premises in 1975/6. This photograph was previously titled 'Durban, Natal', but 'Durban' has been crossed out by the original hand and 'Pietermaritzburg' has been added to the right hand side. The print is also annotated, in pencil, with '22 Church St' and 'Edward Rance in 75 not 79', presumably by the original cataloguer.
