'The chimney', 1932 - 1947
Scope and Contents
The chimney was one of the largest self supporting chimneys in East Africa at this time. It was built by what was originally known as the Natal Tanning Extract Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of a company of this name in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa, which in turn was a subsidiary of the Forestal Land Timber & Railways Co. Ltd. of London. The album also contains cuttings from the Manchester Evening News dated 12th April 1933, printed on paper made from wattle wood pulp. The album deals in the main with the construction of the chimney at the Kikuyu factory of the East African Tanning Extract Company, but with many references to the growing of the Black Wattle tree, and to the extraction of its bark. Many of the photographs also show agricultural images.
