New town planning schemes for Kumasi, Gold Coast [i.e. Ghana], 1946 - 1954
Scope and Contents
British Official photographs (reference numbers DW 2552-2562).
The first project of the Town Planning Scheme is the building of an experimental township at Kumasi for African labourers. At Asawasi, two miles out of the town, adjoining a 20 year-old Zongo village, building is going ahead, and when completed there will be 24 houses, with communal laundries. If this experiment is a success, work will go ahead on a self contained town, with its own shopping centre of 28 stores, its own market, community centre, clinic and playing fields. The population will be between 3,000 and 4,000. Mass production methods are used, bricks and tiles for roofing are made on the site. An experimental type of brick has been named 'Swishcrete', 20 parts of swish to one part of cement, and tests have proved them to be a great success. Concrete tiles form the roofing. A feature of the building is the assembly line where roof timbers are turned out all the same size and put together, in less than a minute to be fitted on the roof. Each worker is encouraged to like his job, and in return if satisfactory, is given a certificate of merit.
