African Community Centre, Asamankese, Gold Coast [i.e. Ghana], 1946 - 1954
Scope and Contents
Part of a collection of 12 British Official photographs (reference numbers DW 4408-4418).
In the Gold Coast, the Government has put into effect a long term plan for the erection of Community Centres.
An example of co-operation between private industry on the one hand and a Government and people on the other, was witnessed at Asamankese in the Gold Coast recently, when a Community Centre, built by Messrs. Cadbury Brothers, was formally handed over to the Gold Coast Government.
The centre, sited on a rise overlooking the town, is built on simple but harmonious lines. Its position gives it a certain dignity, while the surrounding native bush lends an atmosphere of quiet calm. It is being run by a local committee of management. Its list of members is growing steadily. The figure reached in the short time it has been in service is 340, including 150 adults.
Under the guidance of two Government Welfare Officers, and with the assistance of the local teachers, day and night classes are being conducted. The scheme in progress cover such subjects as reading and writing for those unable to, folk dancing, homecraft, and needle-work. Sports are a great attraction for the men; there is Deck Tennis, Table Tennis and Football, but the premier attraction is Boxing. Child care, domestic training, and dress-making classes are well attended by the women and girls of the town. There is a well-equipped canteen for refreshments.
