An agriculture school run by experts has been started in Oyo, Nigeria, for young West Africans between 17 and 27, to encourage them to return to the land and farm profitably. Since the school was opened in 1942, the first experimental class has now finished their training, and are settled on the land. Seven of the ex-students are remaining in the Farm School. Each received four acres of good land for buildings for their livestock and a £10 grant to build a house. There they have settled as a rural community, and their farms serve as a model for the new pupils. To attract good material straight from schools, the Agricultural Department awards scholarships up to £60 for successful candidates for subsistence during the two-year course, and to buy livestock and equipment when he passes out. Teaching is in English, and mostly practical work. All branches of mixed farming are taught, and visits and information with local settlers are exchanged. In due course the school proposes to experiment with illiterate youths who are farmers already. If the young men can be attracted to farming by modern methods, one of the serious economic and social problems of Nigeria may be solved.
