The Stanley Falls fisheries at Stanleyville [i.e. Kisangani] 1912-14, 1912 - 1914
Scope and Contents
99 x 75 mm. A view showing the wooden stagings of the fish traps:
'Towards the end of the low-water season, small tree-trunks and great supporting posts are fixed upright amongst the rocks and broken water at the falls ... Upon these are built elaborate stagings, lashed with forest creeper ropes, and stretching far out across the tumbling rapids from both banks. Six or ten feet beneath the staging, according to the height of the water, are suspended conical or bell-shaped basket fish-traps, up to ten feet or more long, and several feet in diameter at the wide end, which is placed uppermost in the stream ... Early each morning ... the fish traps are raised, and the fish taken out and sold on the spot'. Christy (1924), p.267-8.
Christy, who had several newly discovered species of fish named after him, collected many of his specimens from the fishermen who operated the traps.
