Scope and Contents

Large scrapbook chronologically documenting Smedley’s time in Ghana from his reappointment in March 1966, containing documents, newspaper cuttings and photographs (black and white, many annotated by Smedley). Items include the formal presentation of letters of credential 14 April 1966; copy of programme and speech delivered by Smedley at a prize-giving day at Takoradi School, 2 July 1966; official functions; newspaper reports regarding the decision of the Home Secretary not to allow the extradition of Kwesi Armah (January 1967); visit of George Thomas, British Minister of State for Commonwealth Affairs (February 1967); signing of new loan agreement by UK to Ghana (August 1967); documents on arrangements for the Queen’s birthday party, 20 April 1967; newspaper cuttings relating to Smedley’s farewell functions, October 1967; Lady Smedley’s involvement in Abesim; a list of contacts in the British High Commission, Accra; and Embassy staff list in Laos, November 1969.
