Scope and Contents
Large scrapbook chronologically documenting Smedley’s time in Ghana, principally consisting of newspaper cuttings and photographs (colour and black and white, many annotated by Smedley). The volume includes Smedley’s formal appointment by the Queen, on 4 November 1963; various newspaper cuttings announcing his appointment; Smedley’s arrival and presentation of credentials to Dr Kwame Nkrumah; newspaper cuttings of various business and diplomatic trips; the visit of Arthur Bottomley (Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations) to Accra, August 1965; Ghanaian protests at Southern Rhodesia’s Unilateral Declaration of Independence; letter of thanks from Dr A.D.D. Broughton on behalf of the delegates of the UK Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association for Smedley’s help during their visit, 9 December 1965; newspaper cuttings on Ghana’s diplomatic break with Britain, December 1965; telegram to Smedley from Commonwealth Relations Office lamenting the break, December 1965; invitation to farewell party for Smedley; list of signatures of staff of British High Commission in Accra thanking Smedley, 21 December 1965; newspaper cuttings on Smedley’s departure from Ghana and the coup of 1966.
