Notes on Mubende District, 1960 - 2000
Scope and Contents
This is a detailed reflection by Lanning upon his years in Mubende, written in response to a questionnaire and letters. He discusses trade routes, administrative preparations for independence, the railways, the geography of the district, the role of the district officer, governors, development policy, communication with the chiefs, the role of Africans in administration, trade schools, economic ventures, missionaries and religion, chiefs, lack of trained staff, residents, length of service, the background and training of district officers, development in Mubende, and road networks. The file also includes an article published by Lanning in the ‘Uganda Journal’, brief notes on the history of agriculture in Uganda, and a much later letter commenting upon colonial service (40 sheets).
