Swazi matron, Nzoka area, Swaziland [Eswatini], 1949
Scope and Contents
'The Swazi married woman may be recognised by the piled up hair, or ‘isiqolo’. Unlike the flower pot shape of the Zulu ‘isiqolo’, hers is rounded, hair at forehead and temples being wrought into delicate, oiled corkscrew curls. Other essentials of the married woman's dress are the goatskin apron and black leather skirt. The apron is of long haired goatskin, having a centre panel cleared of fur and a strongly string-bound upper edge. This apron is tied under the armpits when a woman is newly wed, and over the right shoulder in later married life. The black leather skirt or ‘isidwaba’ is of oxhide finely prepared. A coloured hip-cloth and belt are also typical dress. The ‘isiqolo’is clayed red as is customary, but the other decorations are too ornate to be true Swazi. These are traditionally of pollens, powdered roots and ochres, now chalk, blue, mustard.
