Swazi widow, Mbabane, Swaziland [Eswatini], 1950
Scope and Contents
'The Swazi woman, immediately upon losing her husband retires into her hut for a week and during that period she is employed making her widow's weeds, assisted by other women of the kraal. Her hair is shaved and she is fitted with a skull cap of plaited grasses. Other items are grass twists passing diagonally across the body and over the shoulders; a saddle of grass loops through which are attached thongs of oxhide; a medicinal necklace. Her married woman's apron of goatskin is scraped clear of all hair and presents a forlorn appearance. This peculiar mourning apparel is seldom seen today, its place being taken by the use of black material. A woman in mourning is a nervous subject for camera or pencil as she is in fear of offending the spirit of the departed.'
