'A sketch of four sand storms passing over the Kalahara [Kalahari] Desert before the rainy season sets in', Dec. 1874
Scope and Contents
The caption reads, 'Some of these gigantic sand storms are 50 feet through and will take up sticks, a man's coat or hat if they are in the line they are travelling. The storm in this sketch took place in December 1874, some three miles from Abekus Pitts and 10 miles south of the sand dunes some 200 feet high. The Pitts are shown on this map. The sand dunes are seen in the sketch that forms the distant hills. The sand columns travel at great speed and follow in line. The atmosphere is full of sand. The sand dunes extend from north to south over 10 miles and from east to west some 30 miles'.
