Scope and Contents

A file holding three examples of Christmas cards produced by Spitting Image Productions Limited, made for public sale. The following are available:

1. A card from 1986 that has a plasticine model illustration on the front of Santa Claus pointing a gun to his own head, while his other hand holds a UB40 card [a former UK unemployment benefits card]. The photographic image on the front was taken by John Lawrence Jones (SI/461).

2. A card from c 1987-1988, which features a plasticine model illustration on the front of Michael Parkinson and Margaret Thatcher kissing underneath the mistletoe. This image was also used in the Spitting Image 1988 calendar. The photographic image was taken by Terry Beddis (SI/117).

3. Three copies of a card, c 1988, 'The Plumb-Pudding in Danger,' which is a play on the James Gillray caricature of the same name from 1805. While the original depicted British Prime Minister William Pitt and Napoleon Bonaparte carving up the world, shown as a plumb pudding, the Spitting Image version swaps those two individuals for Margaret and Denis Thatcher, while Nigel Lawson's head is used as the pudding; drawn by David Stoten (SI/202). Accompanying these cards are two others bearing the original caricature. One of these cards contains an invite to Roger Law to attend a dinner.
