Biographical / Historical

Sir Frederick Howard Hamilton (1865-1956) was educated at Mill Hill School and Caius College, Cambridge, before reading for the bar at the Inner Temple. He settled in South Africa in 1889, and founded the 'Zoutpansberg review' in Pietersburg. He joined 'The Star' in 1890, becoming editor in 1895. His opposition to the Jameson Raid and other differences of opinion with those controlling 'The Star' led to his resignation and return to Britain, where he became a successful financier. Hamilton died on 29 January 1956 at Tadworth. In 1937 Hamilton wrote an account of his memories of the Jameson Raid at the request of Mr Howell Wright of Cleveland, Ohio. Copies of the account were deposited at Yale and Rhodes House, and it was published, with an introduction by Vincent Harlow, in the 'English historical review', vol. 72, no. 283 (1957), pp. 279-305.
