Biographical / Historical

Moshoeshoe (c. 1786-1870), Paramount Chief of the Basuto, agreed a treaty in 1843 that created Basutoland as a state under British protection. Sir Theophilius Shepstone (1817-1893) was Secretary for Native Affairs, Natal. Robert William Keate (1814-1873) was Lieutenant-Governor of Natal, 1867-1872.
