Panorama of Freetown, 1847

 Sub-Fonds
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/RCMS 113/94

Scope and Contents

This detailed five part printed panorama of Freetown, Sierra Leone, was created in 1847 by Mrs Terry, the wife of the Assistant Superintendent of the Liberated Africans. Four of the prints are views from her upstairs windows in the Church Missionary Grammar School house, formerly the resident of the Assistant Superintendents. The fifth is a view of the town and harbour from the promontory of King Tom's point. Each print measures 2' 2'' by 10''. Terry had her sketches lithographed and sold by subscription to fund the establishment of a school for illegitimate girls.
There is an accompanying folder containing related correspondence between Christopher Fyfe of the Centre of African Studies, Edinburgh, and D.H. Simpson, R.C.S. Librarian, 13 May 1971 - 10 July 1971. The folder also contains reproductions of a circular advertising the sale of copies of the panorama, a letter to Mrs Terry from Henry Venn, Honorary Secretary of the Church Missionary Society, 7 June 1847, and a list of subscribers to the panorama.
