Decolonisation and multi-racialism in Tanganyika, 1996
Scope and Contents
A photocopy of notes compiled 21 June 1996 (24 pages), sent to Dr Deborah Fahy Bryceson of the African Studies Centre, Leiden, in response to her letter in the 'Bulletin of Tanzanian affairs', no. 54 (1996), asking 'anyone who lived in Tanganyika for any length of time during the years 1945-1961 to send me their recollections'. The notes cover race relations, 'African education and meritocracy', local government, T.A.N.U., and the role of civil servants in political change. There are seven further pages of material relating to Tanzania, including Dr Bryceson's letter.

Biographical / Historical
Donald Barton served in the military, 1946-1948, before attending Oxford University. He was admitted to the Colonial Service in 1952, and was sent to Tanganyika, where he was District Officer, Maryoni and Kondoa Districts, 1952-1954, and Lindi and Masasi, 1955-1958, and District Commissioner, Ukerewe, 1958-1961.
