Scope and Contents

An undated copy of Ponsonby's diary covering his departure from England on 8 January 1898, his journey from the East African coast to Uganda and military operations. Ponsonby stopped writing at the end of 1899 after he became ill. There is a page summarising the events of 1899 when he served under Col. Evatt in operations against Mwanga and Kabarega before returning to England later in the year. The diary is illustrated with numerous sketches. The collection includes photocopies of typescript and manuscript letters and orders of 1898 and 1899. There is also a copy of a letter of 25 November 1947 from Michael Moses to Col. Charles Ponsonby, a relation of Sir John, sending his good wishes.

Captain John Ponsonby (1866-1952) of the Coldstream Guard was one of the British officers sent to East Africa following the Uganda Mutiny of 1897.
