Scope and Contents

A confidential, typescript memorandum concerning Tarikas (Islamic fraternities) in the Northern Provinces of Nigeria. The memo was issued to C.E.J. Whitting, and includes his pencil annotations on the last page. The full title is 'Mahdist and other religious revivals in the Northern Emirates of Nigeria: a précis and appreciation from recent correspondence on the subject by T. Hoskyn Abrahall, A.D.O.'

Biographical / Historical

Sir Theo Chandos Hoskyns-Abrahall (1896-1975) was born on 17 December 1896 and educated at Epsom College. He served in the First World War, 1915-1920, during which he was Captain of the London Regiment in France, Salonika and Palestine. He became Administrative Officer in Nigeria in 1921, Senior District Officer, 1936, Resident, 1937, and Deputy Chief Secretary, 1939. He served as the Acting Chief Secretary and the Governor’s deputy on various occasions from 1939. He was Chief Commissioner, Western Region, 1951-1952. Hoskyns-Abrahall was knighted in 1950. He died on 24 January 1975.
