Biographical / Historical

Sir William Frederick Gowers (1875-1954) was educated at Rugby and Trinity College, Cambridge. He worked for the British South Africa Company in Southern Rhodesia, 1899-1902, before entering the Colonial Civil Service in Northern Nigeria, 1902. He was part of the Cameroons Expeditionary Force, 1915-1916. Gowers became Lieutenant-Governor of Nigeria in 1921, and was Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda Protectorate, 1925-1932, and Senior Crown Agent for the Colonies, 1932-1938. He was Deputy Chairman of the Cereals Control Board, 1939-1940, and Civil Defence Liaison Officer, S. Command, 1940-1942. He died on 7 October 1954.
