Scope and Contents
A 16mm, colour cinefilm, without sound. The writing on the film can reads: 'Tanganyika. Erosion scenes, building bridge, lake and fishing'. A note included with the cinefilm mentions the building of the railway bridge 'over R. Mukundokwa (nr. Kilosa), 1937?'
0 - 4sec. Bridge.
4 - 8sec. Cattle and goats being herded.
8 - 11sec. People (accompanying the livestock?) carrying loads.
11 sec - 1min 11sec. Extensive erosion, and evidence of railway bridge-building activity.
1min 11sec - 1min 16sec. Car parked in the road, and evidence of erosion in the area.
1min 16sec - 1min 21sec. Two people pushing and running behind a train trolley on the railway track.
1min 21sec - 1min 31sec. Railway bridge building materials/structures, and the railway line.
1min 31sec - 1min 36sec. Sand trapping fences (strong straining posts retaining piles of rocks) beside the railway.
1min 36sec - 1min 40sec. Men on a train trolley on the railway line.
1min 40sec - 2min 10sec. Further erosion scenes, including sand build-up around a bridge.
2min 10sec - 2min 13sec. Goods train passing, with a man watching its progress.
2min 13sec - 2min 48sec. Extensive erosion scenes, with large gullys.
2min 48sec - 2min 58sec. Views of the surrounding area, from a high angle.
(Including, according to writing on the cinefilm can, the ‘Highland Ridge’. Exact location unidentified).
2min 58sec - 3min 10sec. Number of parked cars and a few people. Perhaps a market scene?
3min 10sec - 3min 20sec. Various unidentified buildings.
3min 20sec - 3min 27sec. Local men carrying loads on yokes.
3min 27sec - 3min 35sec. Car driving up towards a large unidentified building.
3min 35sec - 3min 39sec. Row of small thatched houses, each with abundant flowers in their gardens.
3min 39sec - 3min 54sec. Green lizard with an orange head (perhaps an Agama lizard) on the ground and then crawling up the side of a building.
4 min 33 sec - 4min 41 sec. Views of various unidentified buildings.
4 min 42 sec - 5 min 5 sec. A view looking out to sea/lake.
5 min 06 sec - 6 min 2 sec. Men fishing: working together waist deep in water and using nets. They then pull the nets with their catch onto the shore where they begin to sort the fish.
6 min 3 secs-6 min 4 secs. A man records the catch in a small notebook.
