Scope and Contents

From the File:

John Ewart Marnham had admirable opportunities for photographing flora and fauna during his stay in South Africa and in this section his own arrangement under species has been largely followed; the divisions are: lions, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos [rhinocesaurus] and hippos [hippopotamus], zebras, giraffes, buffalos, kudu, other deer and miscellaneous. Most of these animals were photographed in national parks and game reserves, though not all slides have specific locations. The main parks and reserves shown are: Kruger National Park: This vast game sanctuary on the Mozambique border of the Transvaal covers 8000 square miles. Places in it which are mentioned on photographs are Letaba, Skukuza, Pretoriuskop and Orpen. Visits were paid to the park in August 1967, February and April 1968 and possibly February 1969: the photographs processed in that month are marked Mala; this has not been identified though there is a Malelane in the park. All the rhinocesaurus photographs, except two from Swaziland, and probably all the elephant and lion photographs, were taken in this park. Swellendam Bontebok National Park, Cape Province. The main purpose of this park is to protect a herd of some 200 Botebok, but there are also other animals of the deer family in it. John Ewart Marnham took photographs there in March and August 1968. Willem Pretorius Game Reserve, Allemanskraal, Orange Free State. Photographs were taken here in August 1967 (including birds) and August 1968.
