Scope and Contents

From the File:

The early photographs in this section were taken during two visits to Kokstad in the east of the province; the first at the end of 1965 followed John Ewart Marnham's visit to Lesotho; the remainder dated August 1967. A number of purely family photographs have been removed. Following these are a number of scenes in the vicinity of Cape Town and along the southern coast - Somerset West, George, Knysa, Hermanus, the ostrich farm at Oudstchoorn, the mouth of the Storms River and nearby Tsitsikamma, noted for its yellow wood trees - John Ewart Marnham's father Arthur Ewart Marnham appears in a number of these photographs dated March 1968. Photographs dated July 1968 are of a journey in the north of the province to Griquatown, Brulsands, Postmasberg, and through the mining area of Finsh, Sishen, Ulco to the Vaal River diggings on the borders of the Transvaal; during this time Marnham also paid a visit to Kuruman, the missionary post of Robert Moffat, and for a time David Livingstone. Apart from three undated photographs of Kimberley, which may have been visited in the course of the journey just described, the remainder are of the southern part of the province including the Bontebok Park at Swellendam; there are also slides of the Bontebok preserved in the park in Marnham Y.
