The New York Times Magazine, 1975 - 1976
Scope and Contents
A file containing full issues and tearsheets for the American Sunday newspaper supplement, The New York Times Magazine, which feature Luck & Flaw plasticine model illustrations. All these illustrations appear on the front covers of the issues, and those represented were American presidential candidates for the 1976 election.
The following are present:
1. A tearsheet containing the front cover of issue 14 December 1975, along with a photostat proof, which feature an illustration of [future] President Jimmy Carter, depicted as a peanut farmer; photographic image taken by Bob Cramp. This image also appeared in other publications, including Stern and The Sunday Times Magazine (L&F/30).
2. Issue 11 January 1976, along with a tearsheet containing the cover, which feature an illustration of the former Governor of Alabama, George Wallace, depicted as sitting on a porch with a Confederate States of America flag draped over his knees; photographic image taken by Bob Cramp (L&F/246 (a)).
3. Issue 1 February 1976, which features an illustration of Democratic politician, Morris Udall, depicted as a basketball player; photographic image taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/243).
4. A tearsheet for issue 22 February 1976, which features an illustration of [future] President Ronald Reagan, depicted as a cowboy, dressed in a rhinestone shirt and sat in a cowboy boot; photographic image taken by John Lawrence Jones (L&F/200).
Also present is a black and white photostat proof for a proposed cover, which features an illustration of American Democratic politicians, Hubert Humphrey and Edmund Muskie; photographic image taken by Bob Cramp (L&F/153).
The illustrations for Carter, Reagan and Wallace received an award from the American Institute of Graphic Arts in 1977.
