Reference Negatives, 1961 - 1968
Scope and Contents
A box holding 35mm photographic negatives that contain reference images for illustrations produced by Roger Law, as part of his work at The Observer, The Sunday Times Magazine, and other publications in the 1960s. These reference images include those of individuals, such as United States Senator Robert F. Kennedy and American writer and civil rights activist, James Baldwin; sporting activities, such as horse racing, rowing and weightlifting; and particular environments, such as a court room and a veterinary clinic. There are also negatives with images that document the making of some of Law's illustrations. Among the negatives, there are also some contact prints.
The box also has an envelope that holds four sets of 35mm negatives, which contain images relating to the making of the puppet film, The Milkman: A Satire on Capitalism, which Law undertook with students at Reed College, Oregon, during his stay there as Artist-in-Residence, between 1967 and 1968.
