The Establishment Nightclub Murals, c 1962

 Sub-Series
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.10275/1/2/1/2

Scope and Contents

Large murals/giant cartoon strips produced by Roger Law that were displayed at Peter Cook's comedy/jazz nightclub, The Establishment, based in Soho, London. Law made these murals on a weekly basis for a period in 1962 (perhaps starting earlier in late 1961), and they were displayed on a wall opposite the club's bar. The murals either commented on something that was circulating in the news at the time or illustrated other ideas by Cook and Law.

The murals are on large newsprint paper rolls, and the artwork found upon them have been produced using a number of different methods, including: woodcut prints, collages, and drawings done with felt-tip pen and coloured crayon; the latter is the most prevalent.
