Scope and Contents

A portfolio that primarily contains items featuring artwork produced by Roger Law, which relate to his collaborations with the author/journalist, Jeremy Sandford, both for an 1964 article in The Observer Weekend Review, titled, What Goes on in Majorca, and a book, Synthetic Fun, published in 1967. The latter contains images found in the former, along with other artwork that is present in this portfolio, previously published elsewhere. There is also a couple of items in this portfolio that do not relate to the Sandford collaborations.

The following items are present:

1. A mounted original pencil drawing of a bookmaker, along with reference photographs (RL/Pre-/795). This image featured in an issue of Queen, published 24 March 1965, and later in Synthetic Fun.

2. A mounted original pencil drawing of a black woman, which is known as 'Shop Girl.' This image featured in an article about black women in London, published in the magazine, Nova, c 1967 (RL/Pre-/814).

3. A mounted woodcut print containing an image of St. Francis of Assisi, which was originally printed for a mural displayed in Peter Cook's nightclub, The Establishment, in 1962 (RL/Pre-/931).

4. Two mounted pencil drawings, containing two gentlemen having dinner at a club, which were originally produced for an article written by Jane Wilson, titled, No Spare Birds Down at the Wheel, which featured in the 24 October 1965 issue of The Sunday Times Magazine (RL/Pre-/749 (c) and (d)). These images were later used for Synthetic Fun.

5. A mounted coloured pencil drawing of a hotel barman, which was also produced for the Wilson article and later used in Synthetic Fun (RL/Pre-/984).

6. Five black and white photographs containing images of artwork produced for the article, What Goes on in Majorca, four of which were later included in Synthetic Fun (RL/Pre-/799, 800, 801, 802 and 812).
