Scope and Contents

A portfolio holding an array of drawings, woodcut prints, proofs, photographic material, newspaper/magazine tearsheets and other items; all of which contain artwork or relate to artwork produced by Roger Law for various publications, organisations and companies.

The following items are present:

1. Three copies of a menu for the Humphrey Ridley Tomalin farewell dinner, which feature eight portraits printed from pencil drawings. The date of the dinner was the 24 February 1965 (RL/Pre-883).

2. A couple of letters from Charlie Gillett (writer at Ink (The Other Newspaper)) to Law, and a number of rough scripts for cartoon strips, including The Dropout, Ernest the Policeman, and Hanjob. Material dates from 1970 to 1971.

3. A tearsheet from the magazine, Ramparts, which features a photograph of a plasticine model illustration of the American attorney and presidential counsel, Clark McAdams Clifford (RL/Pre-/1051).

4. Unidentified pencil drawings (RL/Pre-/1473 (a)-(b)).

5. A rough pencil drawing and a leaflet for Rank Xerox machines, the latter which contains artwork by Law, including the finished version of the pencil drawing present (RL/Pre-/1101).

6. Several copies of letterhead paper for the company, Landsbury Publications. The logo for the letterhead was designed by Deirdre Amsden, and the print produced by Law from a woodcut (RL/Pre-/1135).

7. Three photographs of three landscape pencil drawings, which go by the titles: 'Winter,' 'Orchard in Winter,' and 'Farm Machinery.' The images are of locations in either the Fens or Essex (RL/Pre-/1024 (a)-(c)).

8. Photographs/photocopies of two pencil drawings, one of an agricultural show and the other of a corner pub (RL/Pre-/1026 (a)-(b)).

9. A photograph of a pencil drawing, depicting pollarded trees (RL/Pre-/1025).

10. Photographs of two pencil drawings, depicting Overshot Mill, in the village of Colne Engaine, Essex (RL/Pre-/1023 (a)-(b)).

11. Photographs of four pencil portraits; individuals depicted are: the musician and poet, Ted Milton; a man in a hat, Deirdre Amsden, and an unidentified man (RL/Pre-/1022 (a)-(d)).

12. Original artwork and two proofs for a Watney's Red Barrel Beer advertisement (RL/Pre-/1104).

13. Original artwork that was used to illustrate the article, Americans and Race, featured in issue 401 of the magazine, New Society (RL/Pre-/1102).

14. A magazine tearsheet from an unidentified publication, containing an article by Arthur Eperon, The Motorvan: Wagon-Lit for the Lit-Up Vagrant, which is illustrated by Law (RL/Pre-/1012).

15. A newspaper tearsheet from The Sunday Times, containing a print of a pencil drawing depicting author and literary critic, Cyril Connolly (RL/Pre-/816).

16. A newspaper tearsheet from an unidentified issue of Nova, containing the article, A Morning at the Vet's, which features plasticine illustrations (RL/Pre-/1057).

17. Three unrelated pencil drawings (RL/Pre-/1122 (a)-(c)).

18. A woodcut print illustration of Bertrand Russell, which featured in an unidentified issue of Union Voice (RL/Pre-/925).

19. A woodcut print of a Roman man (RL/Pre-/885).

20. A tearsheet from an issue of The Observer, containing an article by Eric Newby, Affluence on the Golden Mile, which is illustrated with prints from pencil drawings (RL/Pre-/807).

21. Photographic negative containing illustrations used in a 1961 issue of Motif (RL/Pre-/860).

22. A magazine tearsheet from the 5 May 1962 issue of Granta, containing a section of Roger Williams' Candide, which is accompanied by a monoprint illustration (RL/Pre-/1004). There are also photocopies of the monoprint.

23. Three original pencil and pen drawings; purpose is unknown (RL/Pre-/1002 (a)-(c)).

24. A monoprint, titled, Conspiracy (RL/Pre-/1003).

25. A large black and white photograph of the front cover of the 16 July 1967 issue of The Sunday Times Magazine, which features a plasticine model illustration of President Lyndon B. Johnson sat on the United States Capitol (RL/Pre-/711 (a)).
