Scope and Contents

A portfolio holding an array of drawings, woodcut prints, proofs, posters, and other items; all of which contain artwork by or relate to Roger Law's activities with various publications, organisations and companies.

The following items are present:

1. A proof on newsprint paper of a woodcut print, which features an image of Winston Churchill and Sir Harold Nicolson. This image was used in The Sunday Times, as part of The War Diaries of Sir Harold Nicolson series, which commenced at the beginning of September 1967 (RL/Pre-/695).

2. Vinyl record cover for the The Who album, The Who Sell Out, along with proofs for the cover. The cover contains photographs, which feature Medac and Odorono props held by band members. These props were made by both Law and Deirdre Amsden (RL/Pre-/898).

3. Vinyl record cover for The Jimi Hendrix Experience album, Axis: Bold as Love, along with proof and reference item. The collage on the cover was done by Law (RL/Pre-/896 or 897).

4. Four large butterfly wings made from textile, which were used as part of a Noël Coward plasticine model. The image of this model featured in the June 1973 issue of the magazine, Nova. These wings were made by Amsden (RL/Pre-/708).

5. Multiple copies for a poster advertising the December 1961 issue of Granta, which features artwork by Pat Douthwaite. Law and Amsden were the magazine's art directors for this and several other issues (RL/Pre-/988).

6. Original drawing and poster for The Cambridge International Centre, based at Trinity Street (RL/Pre-/1466).

7. A large black and white group photograph that features members of The Sunday Times Magazine art department, including Law and David King.

8. Original ink drawings of a cartoon strip that features judges. This strip was published in the Almost the End section of The Observer Weekend Review, on the 24 June 1962 (RL/Pre-/782).

9. A poster advertising a new satirical page in The Observer Weekend Review, titled, Almost the End, which will feature contributions from Peter Cook, Michael Frayn and Law (RL/Pre-/857).

10. A woodcut print that features the portrait of a man (RL/Pre-/1461 (a)).

11. Two woodcut prints, known as 'Preacher' and 'Congregation.' These images would be used in one of the cartoon strips made for Cook's The Establishment nightclub, in Soho, London (RL/Pre-/930 (a)-(b)).

12. A woodcut print that features the portrait of a nun (RL/Pre-/1463).

13. Two copies of a woodcut print that features the portrait of a man. This image was used on an anti-nuclear poster (RL/Pre-/1456).

14. Four copies of a woodcut print, which features Sir Roy Welensky as a warthog. This image was used with two others in an April 1962 issue of the magazine, Queen, and was also used in a cartoon strip displayed at The Establishment nightclub (RL/Pre-/818).

15. A number of pencil drawings containing images of judges that were used in the article, View from the Bench, written by Sybille Bedford, which featured in The Observer Magazine, published the 15 May 1966 (RL/Pre-/786).

16. Three drawings that featured in the article, What Goes on in Majorca, published in The Observer Weekend Review, on 13 September 1964 (RL/Pre-/799, 800 and 801). These images are also found in the book, Synthetic Fun, written by Jeremy Sandford.

17. Original rough drawings for an unpublished cartoon strip, titled 'The Tiny Freek' (RL/Pre-/1119).

18. Original rough drawings for an unpublished cartoon strip, titled 'Arnie Greenback' (RL/Pre-/1120).

19. Two copies each of two woodcut prints that feature a portrait image of Sir Roy Welensky, the second of which has the addition of a hat drawn in coloured crayon. These were used with the warthog print in the issue of Queen and in the cartoon strip displayed at The Establishment nightclub (RL/Pre-/817 (a)-(b)).

20. A coloured pencil drawing of the cast members of the film, The Magnificent Seven, in three sections (RL/Pre-/892).

21. Unfinished artwork and a reference item, which originate from Law's visit to Morocco while on assignment for The Sunday Times (RL/Pre-/1470).

22. A large black and white photograph with 'The Assassins' plasticine model illustrations, which features representations of Lee Harvey Oswald, Sirhan Sirhan and James Earl Ray, in handcuffs, standing in front of the United States of the America national flag (RL/Pre-770).
