Portfolio 1, 1960 - 1975
Scope and Contents
A portfolio holding a large array of drawings, woodcut prints, proofs, posters, and other items; all of which either contain artwork produced by Roger Law for various publications and companies or relate to his role as an art director for a publication.
The following items are present:
1. A metal printing plate with an engraved image that featured in The Comedians, published in the 30 January 1966 issue of The Sunday Times Magazine (RL/Pre-/998 (b)).
2. A black and white photograph and a proof of a page from the 6 March 1966 issue of The Sunday Times, which contain illustrations of a boat race and its participants between Cambridge and Oxford Universities (RL/Pre-/815).
3. Multiple proofs of three posters for an Imperial Chemical Industries European advertisement campaign, which contain artwork produced via hardboard cut prints. Each poster has multiple copies, which vary in language. There are also black and white photographs of the three prints used for the posters (RL/Pre-/1011 (a)-(c)).
4. Rough pencil drawings and a tearsheet from an unidentified issue of Nova, containing the cartoon strip, Rat Race (RL/Pre-/766).
5. A series of 17 monoprints, set to an accompanying poem by Christopher Logue, titled, Norris Says, c 1962 (RL/Pre-/1005 (a)-(q)).
6. A page proof for The Sunday Times Magazine, which contains a photograph by Brian Morris of Law's Rupert Murdoch 'Sun King' plasticine illustration. This appeared in the 21 April 1974 issue of the magazine (RL/Pre-/736).
7. Photographic material containing reference images and a shot of a plasticine model in the likeness of Law, which were used in the March 1975 issue of Nova (RL/Pre-/1055).
8. A print, photographic material and a magazine tearsheet containing artwork used to illustrate the article, How the West Was Lost, which featured in the November 1964 issue of Granta (RL/Pre-/933, 1458 and 1459).
9. A poster for a 'Jazz Meets Poetry' event, held at the Cambridge Masonic Hall, on the 9 March 1961 (RL/Pre-/1457).
10. An advert for The Times and The Sunday Times, aimed at an American audience, which features a photograph of the latter publication's Advertising Manager, Bob Ducas, in the pose of the Lincoln Memorial (RL/Pre-/944).
11. A woodcut print illustration of Bertrand Russell, which featured in an unidentified issue of Union Voice (RL/Pre-/925).
12. A draft front page layout, in pencil, for an unidentified publication (RL/Pre-/1469).
13. A woodcut print illustration of St. Francis of Assisi, which was originally produced to feature in one of the wall murals drawn by Law for Peter Cook's The Establishment nightclub, in London (RL/Pre-/931).
14. A print that was used on the front cover of an October 1961 issue of Granta. Both Law and Deirdre Amsden worked as art directors for this issue (RL/Pre-/987).
15. Multiple copies of a poster, advertising the autumn 1960 issue of Ffobia (RL/Pre-/1018 (a)).
16. Two copies of a poster, one trimmed and the other untrimmed, advertising the 3 June 1961 issue of Granta (RL/Pre-/823 (b)).
17. Multiple copies of a poster, advertising the 2 December 1961 issue of Granta. Both Law and Amsden worked as art directors for this issue (RL/Pre-/989).
18. Multiple copies of a poster, advertising the 13 May 1961 issue of Granta. This was the first issue that Law and Amsden worked as art directors for this publication, and both the issue and its poster contain a woodcut print by Law (RL/Pre-/893).
19. An original coloured drawing containing the cartoon strip, Sid Squeez, which may have featured in an unidentified issue of Nova.
20. Original drawings for the cartoon strip, Computer-Comic, which featured in the November 1971 issue of the German publication, Manager Magazin (RL/Pre-/1014).
21. Original drawings for the cartoon strip, Was Man Für Geld Alles Versichern Kann, which featured in the 26 November 1971 issue of Zeit Magazin Extra (RL/Pre-/762 and 763).
22. Original drawings for a cartoon strip that illustrated an article, titled, The Power of the Post Office, which featured in the 20 June 1971 issue of The Sunday Times Magazine (RL/Pre-/768).
23. Original artwork, proofs and tearsheets for cartoon strips found in the 1 September 1971 and 5 October 1971 issues of Ink (The Other Newspaper) (RL/Pre-/1013 (a)-(b)).
24. Original artwork for a cartoon strip that illustrated the article, Am Sparen Kommt Keiner Vorbei, which featured in the 24 November 1972 issue of Zeit Magazin Extra (RL/Pre-/1005).
25. Original artwork and a rough script for an unpublished cartoon strip, titled The Dropout. This strip may have been intended for Ink (The Other Newspaper) (RL/Pre-/1118).
26. Original artwork that featured on the cover of the 17 May 1970 issue of The Sunday Times Magazine, and in the article, Dear Kindly Social Worker, from that issue (RL/Pre-/764).
27. Two black and white photographs of a William Shakespeare woodcut print, which featured on the front page of the 19 April 1964 issue of The Observer Weekend Review, illustrating James Baldwin's essay, Why I stopped Hating Shakespeare (RL/Pre-911).
28. Original artwork for a cartoon strip drawn to illustrate the lyrics of The Beatles' song, You Can't Do That, as part of the publication, The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics 2, edited by Alan Aldridge. Law's submission for the book was rejected, but some of these images appear to have been used later in Arthur Eperon's article, The Motorvan: Wagon-Lit for the Lit-Up Vagrant, which was published in an unidentified magazine (RL/Pre-/1012).
29. Original artwork and script for a cartoon strip, Driven to Distraction, which appears to have been unpublished (RL/Pre-/1121).
30. Original artwork for an unpublished cartoon strip, The Football Pools (RL/Pre-/1117).
31. A large piece of card that has a list of jobs to be completed; it contains Law's handwriting.
