Scope and Contents

(1) ‘A comunicacon or discours of the Queenes highnes betwen fower Gent. at Montholl in Essex reported by Sir Thomas Smyth knight to his neybore ffrances Wiat gent. 1561 primo Aprilis; (2) copies of five letters from Sir Roger Ascham, (a) to ‘Mr Secretarie Cecill’, 6 October 1561, (b) to ‘Mr Secretarie’, 25 December 1553, (c) to ‘Mr Secretarie Cecill’, 8 June 1567, (d) ‘A lre written by R. A. for a gent. to a gentlewoman in waie of marriage’, (e) to the Bishop of Winchester, [1554]; (3) a remonstrance from certain ministers in Assheby against the prohibition of exercises; (4) copies of pamphlets respecting the title of Mary Queen of Scots to the crown of England, (a) ‘Allegacions against the surmised title of the Queene of Scots and favorers of the same’, (b) ‘A copy of an answere to a little booke herein mencioned’, (c) a letter on the same subject; (5) copies of seven letters to Roger Ascham, (a) from John Hales at Spires, 18 December [no year], (b) ‘From Basinge the L. Treasorer house’, 7 September 1552, (c) from John Hales, 21 January 1551, (d) from the Master of St John’s College, Cambridge, 2 February [no year], (e) from Thomas Leues [sic], 13 November [1551], (f) from John Hales, 3 December 1551, (g) from John Chek, 26 February 1552; (6) a collection of extracts made in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I with special reference to the limitation of the succession and the exclusion of Mary Queen of Scots.
