Scope and Contents

(1) ‘Tractatus Blesensis de arctissima amicitia in [inter] Charolum 9m christianissimum [regem], et reginam Anglie Elizabetham pro mutua defensione suarum personarum, dominiorum, et subditorum initus Blesis ad Ligerim, 19 Aprilis, 1572’; the treaty is followed by the commissions to the ambassadors and the forms of ratification, those of Queen Elizabeth I in Latin, those of King Charles IX in French; (2) ‘Tractatus et confederatio inter Francorum regem Henricum eius nominis quartum et Elizabetham reginam Angliæ, Franciæ, &c. Grenovici, 16 Maii, 1596’; this title is followed by the treaty and the forms as in no. 1; (3) instructions to certain who were sent to the French king with the Order of the Garter, after the ratification of the treaties of 14 and 16 May; Sir Anthony Mildmay being at the same time sent to be the resident ambassador; (4) a treaty between King Henry IV of France and King James I of England, dated 24 February 1606; (5) two extracts from a treaty between King Henry II of France and Queen Elizabeth I, 1559; the first extract relates to Calais and the second to Scotland; (6) ‘Considerations necessaires sur ung traicté de paix avec l’Espagnol, 1587’; the author appears to have been a protestant of the Low Countries; (7) ‘A journall of the conferences betweene his ma’ts commissioners, and the commissioners of the kinge of Spaine and of the archduces of Austria, ducs of Burgundy, &c. treating and concluding of a peace with the aforesaid princes at Somersett House in London, anno 1604’; the journal extends from Sunday 20 May to Saturday 25 August 1604; (8) imperfect copy of a treaty between King Louis XIII of France and King James I, 1610 (inserted between f. 11 and f. 12 of no. 7).
