Part of ancient aqueduct [i.e. aquaduct] about one mile from Salamis, 1908
Scope and Contents
Quarter-plate (landscape format). This was about 35 miles long, bringing water to Salamis from Cythera in the nothern range of hills. Note Church of St. Barnabas in distance, near which is said to have been found the body of St. Barnabas, buried clasping the M.S.S. of one of the gospels. This relic, being taken to Constantinople at the time by the archbishop, obtained the independence of the Church and various privileges from the Emperor Zeno. Good specimen of double-domed Byzantine style.
