Scope and Contents

(1) ‘Arnaldus de Nova Villa’, beginning ‘[M]ateria lapidis est res vilis pretii ubicunque reperitur que est aqua viscosa ...’; (2) ‘Declaratio lapidis philosophorum per Avicennam filio suo’, with a colophon supplying ‘Explicit archanum Avicenne de philosophorum lapide’; (3) anonymous text beginning ‘Hic incipit tractatus optimus in quo exponit et apte declarat Plinius philosophus quis sit lapis philosophicus’; (4) text ‘Per Albertum’, beginning ‘Aqua mercurius et oleum sulphuris’; (5) a collection of dicta of Hermes, Aristotle and others on the subject of alchemy, with a few chemical and medical recipes in English and Latin; (6) text consisting of a preface and four chapters, beginning ‘Lapis aquile cum naturâ preciosissimus ...’, with a colophon supplying ‘Explicit tractatus magistri Johannis de Portâ Claudorum, cuius cognomen quere in hoc libello et invenies’ (John Dee M.A. of Cripplegate, London?); (7) ‘Explicit tractatus de serpente sub compendio breviloquii Holketti’ (title from colophon), purporting to be an exposition of a treatise composed by Aristotle and sent to Alexander in an interval of peace, translated by order of Pope Honorius out of Hebrew into Latin by a certain Greek; (8) an untitled poem on the same subject as (7), and in the same fifteenth-century handwriting, beginning ‘Aske ye of þe clerkys that holden hem so wise ...’, anonymous but attributed to Richard Carpenter in Ashmole's Theatr. Chem. Brit., London, 1652, pp. 275-7.
