Leicester's Commonwealth, seventeenth century
Scope and Contents
'The Copie of a letter written by a Master of Arts in Cambridge to his friends in London, concerninge some talke passed of late betweene two worshipfull and grave men about the present estate and some proceedinge of the Earle of Leicester and his friends in England. Conceived, spoken, and published, &c. A.D. 1584.' This is the celebrated libel afterwards known as Leicester's Commonwealth, the reputed author of which was Robert Parsons the Jesuit, who, however, is said to have disowned it. (See Harleian Miscellany IV. 576.) The present copy appears to be a transcript of the 1584 edition.
