Scope and Contents

(1) (a) ‘Instructions geven by the kings hignes to his right trusty counsaillors the lorde Morley, Sir Willyam Hussy knight and master Edwarde Lee archedeacon of Colchestre and almoner to his highnes touching suche ordre forme and maner as thei with the principall king of armes named Gartier shal observe in presenting and deliveraunce of the gartier and habite of that noble ordre wt the other ornaments thereunto belongyng unto his derrest cousin and nephieu don Fernando archiduke of Austrice, erle of Tirol’, the handwriting being that of Stephen Gardiner with the signatures only of King Henry VIII and ‘your loving ffrende T. Carlis Ebor’, (b) letter from Cardinal Wolsey’s to the same men, dated Hampton Court, 26 August [1523]; (2) (a) ‘Instructions geven by the kings hignes to his trusty counsaillor master Edward Lee his almoner, whom his grace at this tyme sendeth on ambassiate to his good brother son and nephieu themperor’, in Gardiner’s handwriting excepting the king’s signature at the beginning and end, (b) ‘Copie of the kings lres sent by Richard themperors post to the kings ambassadors in Spayne’, in Gardiner’s handwriting without the king’s signature; the letter was written in 1525; (3) letter from King Henry VIII to Edward Lee, 16 July [no year]; (4) letter from Cardinal Wolsey to Edward Lee touching the pensions due to him from Paleuce and Toledo, 29 September [1526]; (5) (a) letter from Cardinal Wolsey to Edward Lee, 21 October [1526], (b) letter from Cardinal Wolsey to Edward Lee, 21 October [1526]; (6) (a) ‘Instructions geven by the kings highnes to his trusty and right welbeloved servant and counsaillor for his body Sir Frances Poyntz knight whom his grace ensuying the tenor of certain treaties passed with his good brother and cousin the Frenche king, sendeth at this tyme on ambassiate unto themperor for overture, soliciting an intymacion to be made unto hym by thambassador of the said Frenche king thereunto to be appointed, and by hym and the kings ambassadors ther resident joyntly of suche things as may tende to the deliverance of the frenche kings childern, satisfaction of the debts due to the kings highnes by the said emperor and thadvancement of particular and universel peax’, the king’s signature affixed at the beginning and end without date, (b) ‘A memorial by wey of a secrete instruction gyven by the kings highnes to his trusty servante and counsailor Sir Frances Poyntz for his better ripyng and knowledge, howe he shall ordre hym self in the charge to hym committed in this ambassiate on the which he is sent by the kyngs grace to themperor, (c) further instructions from Cardinal Wolsey to Poyntz, with the signature of Wolsey affixed; (7) letter from Cardinal Wolsey to Edward Lee and Sir Francis Poyntz, 11 September [1527]; (8) a copy of the treaty of Madrid, 14 January 1526, between the emperors Charles V and Francis I, in French, with the endorsement ‘Tractus Madrilan’; (9) ‘Copia duorum articulorum tractatus arctioris conjunctionis’, the first beginning ‘Item cum dictus imperator electus filios Christianissimi regis pro pignore ...’ and the second ‘Item quum publica orbis tranquillitas ...’; (10) the articles concluded upon between the English and French commissioners, 30 August 1526, in the same secretary’s hand as (9), beginning ‘Universis ... cum preter eam pacis commendacionem ...’; (11) ‘Obligatio indemnitatis’, 19 June 1522; (12) ‘Article de indemnite’, beginning ‘Item pour ce que a l’occasion des guerres passees ...’, 1526; (13) statement of the terms of the obligations by which the emperor was held to the king of England, ‘tam es tractatu Windesore quam ex tractatu prorogationis eiusdem in hispania facto’; on the wide margins have been noted the points wherein the terms have not been observed; (14) ‘A memoriall of suche debtis as bee due by themper to the kings highnes of England’; (15) a rough draft of the English ambassadors’ petition to the emperor, beginning ‘Placeat sue ma’ti inducere ad suam memoriam peticionem ...’; (16) articles for a peace between the emperor and the kings of England and France, in an Italian secretary’s hand, in the form of seven alternative proposals offered to the emperor, the first proposal beginning ‘Primo Cæsar dabit obsides regi sermo Angliæ de restituendo filios solutis sibi ...’ and the seventh ‘Vel si premissa non placeant Cæsari: poterit Cæsar ponere in manus sermi regis Angliæ obsides ...’; (17) a protocol of the emperor’s reply to the nuncio and the other ambassadors, beginning ‘Sacra Cesa maietas que semper xpianorum pacis ...’; (18) notes on the obligations of the treaty of Windsor, endorsed ‘Capitula in quibus fidem non servavit Cæsar’; (19) agreement respecting the emperor’s journey to Italy [1526], in an Italian handwriting, beginning ‘Contentur Cesar venire in Italiam, nisi cum quinque millibus personis ad accipiendam coronam ...’, with an endorsement, ‘Negocia Hispanica’; (20) letters patent granting a safe conduct for the lord de Morley, Dr Edward Lee, Sir William Husey, and Sir Thomas Wriothesley, dated Windsor, 18 August 15 Hen. VIII, on vellum, with the king’s signature.
