Treatises on religion, 1615, c 1650
Scope and Contents
In several different hands of the seventeenth century. Contents: (1) ‘A treatise on the propagation of the soul of man by Mr Henry Hilles [Henry Hills] of Hinxhill, minister’, followed by his answers to the objections of D. de Viduis; written in 1615. Begins ‘Ecc. 12. 7. And before this dust, &c. The former verse namely the 6 ...’, and ends ‘... should be dayly created absolutely full and intire. Finis. Henery Hills’. Prefixed is a letter in Latin and English in praise of the work, from William Fenner to Richard Knatchbull. The work was printed in London in 1667; this is apparently the author’s autograph; (2) a discourse in English on ‘Psalmus 117’; unfinished; begins ‘In the 2 Cor. 12. wee reade of a man ...’; this is written in the same hand as the latter portion of no. 1, and is probably by the same author; (3) ‘Notæ criticæ in Novum Testamentum’, by Sir Norton Knatchbull; begins ‘Matth. i. 19. Ίωσὴφ δὲ ό ἀνὴρ κ. τ. λ. Jsephus vero vir eius ...’. The notes are on the books of the New Testament in order to the end. Some addenda follow beginning with St Matthew. This manuscript, which belonged to his brother, is probably in Knatchbull’s own writing.
