Scope and Contents

‘Opera evangelica, or St James’es and Nicodemus’es gospel, with some other pieces of antiquity. Done into English. To which is added a preliminary discourse concerning ye following treatises together with the Latine copy, from which they were translated, annexed unto them’. Apparently written out for the press. Begins ‘There is no doubt to be made but that our Saviour ...’. The full contents are: (1) ‘The preface, concerning the following treatises’; (2) ‘The gospel of St James the brother of our Lord, concerning the nativity of the mother of God’; (3) ‘The gospel of Nicodemus, concerning the passion and resurrection of our lord and saviour Jesus Christ’; (4) letter of ‘Lentulus, governour of Jerusalem, to the senate and people of Rome’; (5) description of our lord ‘Out of Nicephorus’ Ecclesiastical History, Lib. I. c. 40’; (6) ‘A letter of Pontius Pilate to the Emperour Tiberius, concerning Christ’; (7) ‘The account that Josephus the Jew gives of our saviour Christ’; (8) ‘Out of the letter of Dionysius to Polycarp’; (9) ‘Ignatius to John ye elder’; (10) ‘Exemplar epistolarum Abgari regis et Christi Jesu per Ananiam cursorem hinc inde missarum’; (11) ‘Lentulus Hierosolymitarum præses S. P. Q. Romano’ (this is the Latin of no. 4); (12) ‘Pontii Pylati præsidis Syriæ de Christo testimonium’ (the Latin of no. 6, preceded by an argument, also in Latin); (13) ‘Protevangelium sancti patris nostri Jacobi fratris domini sermo historicus de nativitate deiparæ' (the Latin of no. 2); (14) ‘Nicodemi discipuli de magistri et salvatoris nostri Jesu Christi passione et resurrectione, evangelium’, unfinished (the Latin of no. 3). Nos 1, 2, 5, 7, 10 and 12 are written in imitation of print.
