Caterina Cornara Regina de Cipro, 1870 - 1879
Scope and Contents
196 x 250 mm. Photographic copy of a threequarter length portrait of Catherine of Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus from 1473-89. A note in Cobham's hand states that the portrait is from the Galleria Cossipori, Moolena and the photograph presented by Signoro O.F. Tencajoli. The artist is unknown and the portrait does not match the Bellini painting described by Doros Alastos (1955, p.219), although it may be the painting mentioned in the footnote: 'A picture of Catherine attributed to the school of Bellini, but perhaps one of the many copies known to have been made from a lost original alleged to have been painted by Titian, is now in Cyprus. It came from the Holford collection at Westonbirt and was presented by Lord Duveen to the Government of Cyprus. The painting, life-size, three-quarter length, shows a rather handsome Catherine in her prime. The face is lovely, the neck delicate, but the body is rather stoutish.'
