Scope and Contents
265 x 208 mm (mounted on card). The market and its site were originally under the control of the Capitan China Yap Ah Loy. Bibliography
General
PJ. John Gullick wrote on 20/04/1999: With much respect for John Falconer's expertise, I disagree with his identification of BAM 4/10 as Yap Ah Loy's market building in Old Market Square. As Falconer points out, the roof shown is of the wrong type. The building shown is pretty solid, and so does not merit the description of a very insecure shed. I believe that this is a photograph of the new market, built on a different site, circa 1885. That structure has been extensively rebuilt at various dates, but survives to this day as a shopping centre for tourists (curios etc.)
