Scope and Contents

154 x 105 mm. A group photograph showing Siamese, and Malysian and Indian police, and British officials grouped round the flagpole at Klian Intan after the ceremony by which Siam ceded responsibility for the territory to the British. In front of the police force of the two powers stand (from left to right): Siamese police inspector; Inspector SIMPSON, Perak Police; J.D. KEMP: Manager of the Rahman Tin Co.; Hubert BERKELEY (1864-1942); M.S.C. 1886-1926; District Officer, Upper Perak 1904-1926; (Sir) Ernest Woodford BIRCH (1857-1929); British Resident, Perak, 1904-1910 (Sir Arthur Selborne JELF (1876-1947); M.S.C. 1899-1925, at this period employed at the Perak Secretariat and later (1925-1935) Colonial Secretary, Jamaica; Orang Kaya Menteri; one of the four great chiefs of Perak; Orang Kaya Kaya Sri Adika Raja; hereditary chief of the North of Perak. By the terms of the Boundary Protocol attached to the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 a British Protectorate was established over the unfederated Malay States of Kedah, Kelantan, Trehgarru and the Reman portion of Patani and on July 14 1909 Birch set out from Grit with an escort of Indian and Malay police to formally take over the last named of these areas. After reading the secession proclamation in various villages passed through on the jouney, Klian Intan was reached late in the following day. At 2 p.m. the following day the ceremenony of lowering the Siamese flag and replacing it with that of Perak took place in front of the police station. Photographs were taken after the ceremony by the Siamese representative, Wan Husein, Ampur of Betong and the British party returned to Grit, reaching it, reaching it on July 23.
