Entries for December, 1773-12-03 - 1773-12-31
Scope and Contents
The early entries for December are intermittent, with daily entries resuming on 23 December. Bayly records that he went on shore at Ship Cove [Queen Charlotte Sound, New Zealand] from 3-16 December to make observations. Lengthy entries for 17-18 December provide an account of an incident in which local Maori killed and cannibalised a party of men from the Adventure who had gone ashore ‘to get greens for the people’. This is followed by a list of those murdered, and of the equipment which was lost along with the cutter [RGO 14/56: 100v]. Bayly took further observations between Cape ‘Terrawitty’ [Terawhiti] and Cape Campbell, and the final entries for the month include sightings of seals, albatrosses and penguins.
