Entries for July, 1773-07-01 - 1773-07-31
Scope and Contents
Daily entries, travelling in the South Pacific towards Tahiti. The July entries contain many astronomical observations, including measurements of the distance of the moon from Spica Virginis and from Antares, often accompanied by comments on the difficulty of taking observations due to bad weather or the motion of the ship. Bayly also records measurements of the ship’s speed by the log line. On 7 July the Resolution sent her boat on board. On 15 and 16 July the ships again fired signals to keep company in conditions of poor visibility, Bayly noting that the air was ‘so very hazey [sic] that we could not see twice the ship’s length’ [RGO 14/56: 74r]. An entry for 23 July records the death of the cook, Murdock Mahony [from scurvy]. The final entry for July records a sighting of a tropical bird.
