Entries for June, 1773-06-07 - 1773-06-30
Scope and Contents
The log book continues on 7 June, when the ship continued its voyage after the period spent at New Zealand, during which time the Adventure had reunited with the Resolution at Queen Charlotte Sound. Bayly does not record details of their reunion.
The ship was travelling through the South Pacific towards Tahiti. The opening entry for June records that Watch No. 1 was running too slow for meantime. Bayly’s entries include astronomical observations taken on 10 June, mention on 11 and 15 June that the ship fired gun signals to keep company with the Resolution in poor visibility, and a record on 17 June that the ship had gone greatly off her reckoning, perhaps due to a heavy swell. On 20 June he records that they found an error in the log line, as the distance between the knots had been made too short [RGO 14/56: 67v]. In the final entries for the month Bayly records sightings of whales and observes that a break in the cloud enabled him to take measurements of lunar distance from the sun [RGO 14/56: 70r].
