Entries for April, 1773-04-01 - 1773-04-07
Scope and Contents
Entries are provided for 1-7 April only, when the ship landed at New Zealand. On 3 April Bayly records sighting the land between Rock’s Point and Cape Farewell, and the following entry includes observations of lunar distance from Aldebaran from which he estimates their longitude. The ship travelled via Stephen’s Island and across the east side of Admiralty Bay, anchoring at the entrance to Queen Charlotte Sound on 6 April. There, Bayly set up an observatory, and his observations are recorded in the entry for 7 April.
