28" Refractor, Royal Observatory Greenwich, 1879 and c.1885-1893
Scope and Contents
A set of technical drawings of the 28" Refractor from the Royal Observatory, Greenwich; many are fragments. The refractor was ordered in 1885 from Sir Howard Grubb of Dublin and brought into use in 1893 when it was installed in the Great Equatorial Building. It went out of active use during the war until 1957, when it was moved to the new observatory buildings at Herstmonceux and mounted in Equatorial Dome F for active use. It was later donated to the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich where it was remounted in its original location in 1971.
