Biographical / Historical
The University Grants Committee (1919-1989) was a British Government advisory committee which advised on the distribution of grant funding amongst the British universities. Its functions were taken over by the Universities Funding Council (1989-1992), and then higher education funding councils including HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England). The HEFCE (and Higher Education funding councils for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) were established in 1992 after the UFC was wound up by the Further and Higher Education Act.
