 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3052A/105

Scope and Contents

Showing the severed head of a hippopotamus lying on the ground. 'In spite of the order that no game was to be shot to avoid alarming any Matabele in the neighbourhood, Johnson could not resist the temptation offered by a school of four hippopotami disporting in the river. He and the brothers Burnett put an end to their game. The skin, leg bones and skull of a cow [presumably the animal seen here] were at once claimed by William Harvey Brown, an American naturalist sent to South Africa to collect specimens for the Smithsonian Institute. His collecting propensities earned him the nickname of 'Curio', by which he was popularly known in Rhodesia for many years afterwards’, W.D. Gale, ‘One Man’s Vision: The Story of Rhodesia’ (London, 1935), p.52. The animals were then skinned and eaten by the Bamangwato. Photograph taken about August 2.
